Mee Facing Injury Absence

Defender set to miss Foxes reunion but JBG could be back in Clarets' squad

12 April 2018

Ben Mee is set to miss out on a reunion with Leicester City on Saturday and could be absent for the next phase of the Clarets’ push for Europe.

Mee was ruled out of last Saturday’s win at Watford – a fourth successive victory which took Sean Dyche’s men six points clear of Leicester in seventh place in the Premier League.

And Dyche confirmed that the defender – a rock-solid performer as stand-in skipper for the Clarets this season – won't return against the Foxes, where he spent a spell on loan in 2011.

“Ben could be a couple of weeks. We’ll see,” said the Burnley boss.

“He’s got a stress reaction at the bottom of his shin. It’s a stress response to the workload and gets quite sore around where the ankle attaches to the shin.

“He had something similar last year which cost him a few games. We will just have to monitor that and see how it settles down.”

Kevin Long is enjoying his most prolific season for the Clarets

Mee’s expected absence is likely to mean another start for Kevin Long, who took his number of league starts this season into double figures at Vicarage Road.

“Kevin Long was very good last week at Watford. I’ve said it many times, we believe in the squad. It’s not just the 11 way we put out there,” added Dyche.

“It’s a double-edged sword. You don’t want to lose players who have been playing well and who have moulded into the team and the Premier League year-on-year.

“But equally, it’s good for the players who are so diligent with their profession and Kevin Long is certainly one of those, so he gets another chance to play games, which he is doing at the moment.”

Winger Johann Berg Gudmundsson could return to the squad as the Clarets return to Turf Moor for the first time in six weeks after missing the last two games with a calf injury.

“Provided there’s no reaction overnight he’ll certainly be back in the thinking,” said Dyche.

However, GK Nkoudou will require a late check after reporting a tight hamstring, while Scott Arfield is back in training but not yet ready to return in the squad.
