Clarets come from behind to tame the Tigers thanks to Michael Fowler hat-trick

10 April 2018

Michael Fowler hit a hat-trick as the Clarets came from behind to beat Hull and move up to fourth place in the Professional Development League’s northern section.

Fowler (above) struck twice before the break to add to another goal from leading scorer Tristan Jumeau before completing his treble 20 minutes from time as  Danny Cadermarteri’s men avenged a defeat to the Tigers last month.

The Clarets started well and came close through Jumeau who curled an effort just wide of the post.

City then had a chance as Keane-Lewis Potter dinked the ball just over the bar from outside the box.

And the visitors did take the lead with 20 minutes gone, skipper Ahmed Salam squaring for Potter to slot home past Aiden Stone.

However, Hull were only ahead for 12 minutes as Fowler tucked away a cross from Kwazinkosi Mpofu’s cross to make it 1-1.

And minutes later Burnley took the lead as Fowler picked up the ball outside the area before weaving inside and striking past Harrison Vaulkes in the Hull goal.

The Clarets then added a third just before the break to go 3-1 up, Jumeau breaking forward after a mix-up in the Hull defence and coolly lifting the ball past Vaulkes to double Burnley’s advantage.

Chances were thinner on the ground after the break, although went close through Potter who shot  just wide of the post.

But it was the Clarets who ensured all three points as Fowler latched onto Marley Blair’s through-ball and smashed the ball in from close range to complete his hat-trick with his first league goals since August following a mid-season knee operation.

The Clarets moved within two points of Leeds United in the second play-off spot but have played three games more and complete their league programme at home to Bristol City on Saturday.

Burnley: Stone, Cropper, Wilson, Cook, Mpofu, Jumeau, Layton, Kershaw, Blair, Meredith (Harris 75), Fowler (Mupariwa 75). Substitutes: Bruce, Yari, Moss.
