'Cads' Hails Perfomance as Blades blunted

Meredith goal earns Clarets first win in six as Under-18s beat Sheffield Utd 1-0

13 November 2017

The Clarets got back to winning ways with a 1-0 victory over Sheffield United to end a sticky patch of five games without a win in the Professional Development League.

Dylon Meredith’s first-half free-kick proved to be the difference between the two sides as Burnley stayed fifth in the northern section table - only a point behind leaders Nottingham Forest.

“Obviously delighted with a win, but the most pleasing thing for me was the performance," said Under-18s coach Danny Cadamarteri.

"We spoke about having more of a competitive edge - not worrying about winning - but just competing first like a Burnley team does.

"I felt in the first half we dominated the game and moved the ball well in spells.

"In the second half, again, I thought we were always in control and although we didn’t have a lot of defending to do, when we did we did it well.

"Our game-management in the second half was good. Overall it was a pleasing Burnley-type performance and a great reaction to a disappointing performance the week before.”

Cadermarteri’s side started on the front foot and had control of the game throughout the opening stages.

The Clarets came close with just 10 minutes gone when Scott Wilson rose highest in the area from a corner and nodded just wide at the back post.

And Burnley did take the lead just before the half-hour mark when Meredith’s in-swinging free-kick found the top corner from 25 yards out.

Burnley went into the break with a well-deserved half-time lead after a good performance and having majority of the ball.

However, the Blades came out raring to go in the second half following a couple of changes and came close to an equaliser with an effort that hit the woodwork.

The visitors kept pushing for an equaliser but the young Clarets kept the ball well to nullify any attacking threat and hold on for their first win since September.

Burnley: Bruce, Cropper, Trialist, Wilson (Thomas ht), Mpofu (Yari 39), Jumeau, Kershaw, Moss, Meredith (Major 70), Barnett, Trialist. Subs not used: Calderbank-Park, George.
