Keane Hoping For England Chance

21 March 2017

Michael Keane hopes he has done enough to gain England selection and win his first full cap for his country.

Keane's outstanding form for the Clarets this season has earned him a place in Gareth Southgate's last three squads.

The former under-21 international will be part of the travelling party that faces Germany in a friendly in Dortmund on Wednesday night in the first game since Southgate was made England boss on a permanent basis last November.

And with Manchester United defender Phil Jones withdrawing from the squad through injury, and ex-Burnley loanee Gary Cahill banned for Sunday's World Cup qualifier against Lithuania at Wembley, Keane hopes he has impressed Southgate sufficiently to get his first taste of action.

The Burnley centre-back told Clarets Player HD: "That's the same for everyone. You come to England and the squad is filled with great players and players who are playing at the best clubs in the country.

"It will be difficult, but I've always thought if you train well and you are playing well for your club then you would have a good chance.

"I've been lucky enough to get here so far. I just need to go one step further and all I can do is keep playing well for Burnley and when I get the chance to come here, show the manager what I can do on the training pitch and hopefully that leads to my first cap.

"It would be a dream come true."

Keane, who has been training alongside club captain Tom Heaton as part of the squad based at England's St George's Park base since Sunday night, added: "It's great to be part of it and great to train with a squad like this and in an environment like this.

"There's a lot I can learn, even if I don't get game time. But I'm hopeful I can."
