Samms double takes Clarets into semi-finals

Under-18s book their place in the last four of Czech cup thanks to second successive win

21 July 2017

The Clarets Under-18s kept up their flying start to their Generali Cee Cup campaign with a 3-1 win over Canadian side Prostars FC taking them through to the semi-finals of the tournament in the Czech Republic.

Danny Cadamarteri’s side followed up their opening win over host side Sparta Prague with another impressive victory secured by a Bobby Thomas header and a double from Akim Samms.

The Clarets went ahead from a set-piece after half an hour following some excellent work down the left wing by Jordan Cropper.

His efforts earned a corner and when Samms swung the ball in, Thomas founce space to nod home the opener.

The lead lasted just 12 minutes with the Prostars levelling through Joshua Schupak, who scored at the second attempt as he curled a shot just beyond Marcel Wusiewicz.

But Burnley were back in front by the break as Samms struck just 30 seconds later to make it 2-1.

A beautiful searching ball in from Dylan Meredith found Samms, who guided the ball past the outstretched arms of Justin Barrett to open his account.

Burnley started the second half brightly and nearly scored a third following a mazy run by Oscar Woods, whose looping shot was superbly tipped over the bar.

But the Clarets’ pressure did pay off when the ever-impressive Samms fired the Clarets’ into a 3-1 lead and a place in the last four.

Some clever play-making by Meredith found Daniel Moss on the right hand by-line and his cross evaded Jackson Jaelen at right-back to found Samms 12 yards out, with the first-year scholar rifling a shot into the bottom left-hand corner.

Their second win of the group stage made the Clarets the first team into the semi-finals of the under-19s competition, where they will face Slavia Prague or Turkish side Altinordu on Monday.

Academy manager Jonathan Pepper said: "The lads are doing Burnley FC proud, despite being at a lot younger than the opposition."
