Late goals give Dev Squad victory in opener

Clarets beat Colne 2-0 thanks to goals from Tundi Bayodi and Robbie Leitch

18 July 2017

Two late goals gave the Clarets’ Development Squad an opening pre-season win as Tundi Bayodi and Robbie Leitch finally found a way past a determined Colne side at Holt House.

Bayode swept the ball home with 10 minutes to go before Leitch made sure of victory when he volleyed in with virtually the last kick of the match.

The result got Michael Duff’s reign as the Clarets’ new under-23 boss up and running in his side’s first public work-out.

But it was a testing evening for his young charges as Colne made life difficult and never allowed Burnley to dominate until the final stages.

On a night of few clear openings, Burnley had the first after 18 minutes when Dwight McNeill headed wide after Alex Whitmore had nodded a Mark Howarth free-kick back across goal.

The lively Bayodi also shot wide after an excellent turn and run.

But the only save of the first half came from Clarets’ keeper Conor Mitchell as he had to get down smartly to beat away a shot from Danny Wilkins.

And Colne – beaten play-off semi-finalists in last season’s Evo-Stik League Division One North – started the second half the better.

Substitute Jacob Gregory put an just effort wide at the far post, while the Clarets got little joy at the other end against a defence containing the former Burnley duo of Alex Coleman and Chris Lynch.

Another former Claret, midfielder Chris Anderson, had helped Colne force the pace earlier on.

But after both sides had made a number of changes, the Clarets finished strongly to claim victory.

Tinashe Chakwana missed a chance when he shot at keeper Hakan Burton but the break-through finally came when Bayodi, moved into a more central attacking role, finished powerfully from 12 yards after a cross from Leitch had been played back into the penalty area.

And second-half substitute Leitch then got himself on the scoresheet when the winger squeezed the ball in from close range after Ali Koiki’s volley flew across the face of goal following a Jamie Thomas free-kick.
