Barnes Welcomes Wisdom of Walters

Ashley Barnes believes new signing will deliver on and off the pitch

15 July 2017

Ashley Barnes believes Jon Walters will add some crucial know-how to the Clarets as they head into another season of top-flight football.

The arrival of Walters from Stoke City gives Barnes extra competition for a striking slot in Sean Dyche’s plans.

But Barnes feels it’s more than just Walters’ proven Premier League track record that will strengthen Burnley’s hand.

“I think Jon is a great addition. He’s what we need and he’s a good guy,” Barnes told Clarets Player HD.

“After losing Joey (Barton)  – the experienced head you could say – now we’ve got Jon to settle the ship a bit along with the other older ones like Heats as well.”

Walters, 33, scored his first goal in a Burnley shirt as he set the Clarets on their way to a comfortable 4-0 win over Shamrock Rovers in their opening pre-season friendly.

But Barnes also hit the ground running with a smooth finish of his own as part of the second-half line-up used by Dyche in Friday night’s work-out at the Tallaght Stadium.

And, according to Barnes, it was the perfect way to end a productive week’s work on the training ground at the Clarets’ temporary base on the outskirts of Dublin – where Dyche has made no secret of his satisfaction at the squad’s fitness levels.

Barnes added: “I think he was surprised how well the lads came back after the summer.

“We had the break and we have all treated it well and I think he is quite happy with that.

“It’s been a tough week and it was nice to cap it off.

“It’s always a nice feeling when the ball hits the back of the net after the running you’ve been doing during the week.

“You want to win but the main thing for all of us has been the fitness work. Throughout pre-season that’s the main aim.

“We’ve got another tough game next week and then the games come thick and fast and before you know it, it will be the big game against Chelsea.”
