'Proud' Taylor Enjoys Premier League Bow

Defender delighted with winning start as Clarets keep it clean again

13 December 2017

Charlie Taylor was proud to make his Premier League debut as he helped the Clarets climb into the Premier League’s top four.

The left-back has had to bide his time for a first taste of top-flight football since signing from Leeds United in the summer.

But following two appearances in the EFL Cup, Taylor’s Premier League debut finally arrived when he came off the bench to replace Stephen Ward in Burnley’s 1-0 win over Stoke City.

“I’m very pleased. It’s a proud moment for me and for my family,” said the 24-year-old, who was called into action 40 minutes in after Ward’s ever-present record this season was ended by a knock to the knee.

“My dad was actually here. He doesn’t get to too many games so, luckily, he was here.

“It’s what I came here to do, to play in the Premier League, and I’m happy to have achieved that.

“Wardy has done brilliantly this season, so I’ve no complaints, but I had to be ready when I was called upon.

“That came tonight. It wasn’t the greatest conditions, but it was all about the three points.”

Ashley Barnes’ 89th-minute strike clinched a fourth win in five games at Turf Moor and took Burnley up to their highest league placing in 42 years.

But it also took another rock-solid defensive performance to keep the Clarets’ climbing, with Taylor fully playing his part in seeing out an eighth clean sheet of the league campaign as Sean Dyche’s side completed a sixth 1-0 win of the season.

Stephen Ward had played every minute of the Premier League season

“(Xherdan) Shaqiri is up there was one of the best right wingers in the Premier League, I would say, and is an awkward player to play against,” Taylor told Clarets Player HD.

“But we got the clean sheet and I was learning every second I was out there.

“I wouldn’t say it was anywhere near out best game but it shows what we’re all about. We fought to the end and looked solid.”
