Young Clarets Exit Lancashire Youth Cup

28 September 2016

A youthful Burnley U18s side exited the Lancashire FA Youth Cup at the first hurdle to Bury.

With Oliver Younger, Tinashe Chakwana, Scott Wilson, Mark Howarth and Dwight McNeil all rested for Fridays Premier League Cup game at Blackburn Rovers, the door was open for U16 youngsters Dylan Meredith, Ethan Kershaw and Robert Moore.

However, the Shakers won it 2-1 with a last minute strike from Bury’s Rob Harker, after Kwasinkosi Mpofu (pictured above) had equalised in the second half.

It was the home side who attacked early on, as Callum Styles’ free kick was whipped into Wealth Da Silva at the back post, however the winger could not convert his header and missed a great opportunity to but Bury ahead.

The Shakers looked to have broken the deadlock a few minutes later when Styles’ free kick was latched onto by defender Liam Williams in the box, only for his header to come crashing off the bar.

However, the home side did grab the goal they deserved when Harker teed up Styles outside the box to slot home past King and give Bury the lead.

The Clarets, though, were enjoying a brief spell in the ascendancy at the other end of the pitch and looked to have equalised instantly when Tristan Jumeau worked terrifically on the right before finding Tommy Wood outside the box.

However, the midfielder was denied by Cameron McCulloch in the Bury goal.

Just before the hour mark RJ Pingling dinked a nice ball over the Bury defence which Wood latched onto and fired a shot at McCulloch, who tipped the effort onto the bar.

Michael Duff’s side did equalise minutes after when Mpofu curled home an excellent free-kick into the top corner to pull the score level.

The away side were now pushing for a winner and when Tyler Shrimpton whipped in a far post cross for Pingling, Bury’s Charlie Mulgrew just beat the forward to the ball and cleared upfield which the Shakers turned it into a decisive counter attack.

Shrimpton brought down Styles just outside the box and with the game deep into stoppage time and heading to penalties, Harker stepped up to take the free kick and fire into the top corner past a stranded Connor King.
