All Square For Development Squad

25 September 2016

Michael Jolley's Development side warmed up for their Premier League Cup campaign with a draw at home to Fleetwood.

Scott Wilson, pictured above, opening the scoring for the Clarets on his first appearance for the U'21s this season.

However, Akil Wright headed home the equaliser before the break to earn a share of the spoils.

It was the hosts who got the ball rolling early on as Mark Howarth whipped in an inviting free kick and centre back Wilson rose above everyone and smashed home a header from close range.

Burnley came close again when another Howarth corner fell to Dwight McNeil at the back post, however the winger could not convert his header.

Fleetwood then enjoyed a brief spell in the ascendancy - and Kieran Dunbar came close to pulling it level as he burst into the box and put a shot just wide of Mitchell's goal.

However, the away side continued to push for the equaliser and struck when Wright beat his man from a corner to poke home past Mitchell.

From there on, chances were at a premium, with the Cod Army coming closest when Dunbar whipped in a ball for Smith, who headed wide.

And it was the Clarets who could have won it late on after Freddy Yao sent Bradley Jackson through on goal, only for the wide man’s shot to skim the post.

The Development Squad start their U23 Premier League Cup campaign this Friday, away at Blackburn Rovers. This game can be seen live on Clarets Player HD.
