Young Clarets Unsaddled In Walsall

3 October 2016

The Clarets U18s had a tough encounter, losing 3-0 away to a strong Walsall side.

The Burnley side had a large selection of U16s in the squad, with regulars Oliver Younger, Scott Wilson, Tinashe Chakwana, Olatunde Bayode, Mark Howarth and Ali Koiki all featuring for the U23s the previous day, away at Blackburn in the Premier League Cup.

However, it was the visitors who got the ball rolling early on, as Kwazinkosi Mpofu found Tommy Wood outside the box, only for the 6ft 2in striker to fire wide.

It was the Clarets again looking to break the deadlock as Tyler Shrimpton played in RJ Pingling, whose effort glazed just over the bar.

The Saddlers settled, however, and Brad Shorrock tested Connor King from just outside the area after finding himself a few yards of space and pulling off a shot.

Burnley, though, ended the half in the ascendancy and after Mpofu made a bursting run from left-back, he whipped the ball in for Wood, who was denied by Walsall stopper Brandon Ganley.

However, it was the hosts who came out all guns blazing in the second half and struck in the 55th minute, as defender Ben Kendrick nodded home from a corner.

Fifteen minutes later Walsall doubled their lead following an unfortunate own goal from Leighton Egan following a spell of ping-pong in the Clarets’ box.

And things got worse for the young side late on, as Joseph Cairns picked up the ball outside the box before curling in a terrific effort past King.

BURNLEY: King, Egan (Doyle 83) , Clarke, Moss, Mpofu, Shrimpton, Kershaw (Yari 65), T Jumeau, Samms, (Moncrifier 76), Pingling, Wood (Lucas (79)
