Burnley U18s 2 Scunthorpe U18s 1

22 October 2016

Burnley U18s secured their place in the quarter-finals of the northern section of the Youth Alliance Cup thanks to a last-minute winner from Tinashe Chakwana.

Needing maximum points in their final group game to progress, the Clarets led through a Tommy Wood penalty.

But a Scunthorpe equaliser eight minutes from the end of a must-win game for both sides threatened to send Michael’s Duff youngsters out until Chakwana (above) struck a dramatic late goal.

Burnley had the first chance as Olatunde Bayode found RJ Pingling in the box but the forward couldn't convert the effort.

Scunthorpe then came close to breaking the deadlock as Sam Lilley latched onto a long free-kick at the back post with a header which was saved by Connor King.

Tommy Wood came off the bench to put the Clarets ahead

Former Iron midfielder Tyler Shrimpton then whipped in a terrific cross for Pingling but his header was kept out by Scunthorpe keeper Adam Kelsey.

And an entertaining first half ended with David Allasan going through one-on-one with King before hitting his effort wide of the goal as the visitors again went close.

Burnley were inches away from taking the lead early in the second half when Pingling found Chakwana at the back post for a header than found the side-netting.

But with Clarets did go in front when Wood was brought down in the box by Kelsey and the Burnley substitute smashed home the resultant penalty to put the hosts 1-0 up.

That would have been enough to take Burnley through but when Leslie Sackey curled a superb long-range effort into the top corner to equalise, it was group rivals Accrington and Doncaster who were heading into the last eight.

But the Clarets refused to give in and when Miles Fenton found Dwight McNeil out wide, the winger beat his full-back before fizzing a ball across the face of goal which Chakwana steered home to keep Burnley’s cup hopes alive.

Burnley: King, Clarke, Wilson, Younger, Koiki, McNeil  Howarth, Shrimpton (Fenton 81) Bayode (Jumeau 90+2 ), Pingling (Wood 59), Chakwana. Substitutes not used: Wusiewicz, Grogan, Mpofu.
