Euro 2016 Round-Up

14 June 2016

Clarets trio waiting for UEFA Euro 2016 action after their first round of fixtures.

Stephen Ward was an unused substitute as Republic of Ireland were held to a 1-1 draw with Sweden at Stade de France.

Wes Hoolahan’s half-volley gave Martin O’Neill’s men the lead just after the interval before Aston Villa’s Ciaran Clark headed a low Zlatan Ibrahimovic into his own net.

Italy went on to beat Belgium in the later fixture in Group E which means Ireland sit second in the group with those two sides still to play.

Elsewhere, Sam Vokes was also unused as Wales got their campaign off to a flying start with a Group B victory over Slovakia.

A trademark Gareth Bale free-kick sent the Wales contingent into raptures to give them a half-time lead.

Ondrej Duda levelled at 1-1 and the tide looked to have turned in Slovakia’s favour before Aaron Ramsey’s pass found Hal Robson-Kanu, who saw his miscued shot creep into the bottom corner.

That sets up a mouth-watering clash with Tom Heaton’s England on Thursday in Lens. The Clarets skipper was on the bench for the 1-1 draw with Russia on Saturday.

Eric Dier's free-kick gave the Three Lions a deserved lead before Vasili Berezutski's injury time header saw Russia snatch a point.
