A strong Burnley Development Squad played out a goalless draw at Altrincham in the latest pre-season friendly.
Michael Jolley’s squad was complemented by the inclusion of first team players Kevin Long, Rouwen Hennings and new signing Nick Pope.
And only an office flag denied the Clarets a late winner as they enjoyed a competitive clash at Moss Lane.
The first chance of the game fell to Alty’s towering 6ft centre half John Cyrus, who couldn’t find the target with his far post header from a well worked set piece.
The Clarets then looked to have broken the deadlock as Arlen Birch whipped in a fine cross which found Dan Agyei in the box.
The striker, who caught the eye for the first team in the friendly win at Bolton earlier in the week, saw his effort on goal blocked into the path of Hennings, who opened fire from close range forcing a smart save from former Fulham stopper Andy Dawber.
Altrincham came out from the re-start pushing to get the first goal.
And it looked that way when Damian Reeves broke free into the box with only the keeper to beat.
However, captain Kevin Long showed his class and made an outstanding tackle in the box to keep the score at 0-0.
As the clock ticked on it looked as if either team could go on and win it.
And in the 84th minute it looked like Fraser Murdoch had done that for Burnley, as Robbie Leitch's shot deflected off Altincham's skipper Alan Goodall into the feet of Murdoch, who tapped home only to be flagged for offside.
The development squad are back in action on Tuesday night at Chester (7pm KO)
Burnley: Pope, Birch, Dunne, Yao (Thomas 45), Anderson, Long (Olomowewe 70), Jackson, Trialist, Hennings (Metz 70), Agyei (Murdoch 45) Leitch.
