The Burnley FC Shadow Youth Team kicked off the new calendar year with a well-deserved 3-1 victory against well-organised Cheltenham Town side.
The tone of the game was set early in the first half with midfield trio Mo Sangare, Bafude Djabi and Lewis Richmond putting in some strong challenges to deny the Town midfield any time on the ball.
Top goal scorer, Joe Kouadio, scored the opening goal of the game by driving through the opposition defence and coolly slotting the ball into the bottom corner.
Moments later, the Clarets doubled their advantage when Ibrahim Abdijabar latched onto a superb through ball and fired past the keeper from outside the box.
The Clarets had to weather the storm early in the second half, as Cheltenham came out fighting, and just as the home side started to retake control of the game, Cheltenham scored a breakaway goal.
Some excellent defending and goalkeeping kept Cheltenham at bay and with four minutes to go, Martin Enow scored the goal of the game.
Mo Sangare cleared a Cheltenham corner which dropped nicely to Josh Ilesanmi. Ilesanmi then found Enow on the right, who drove forward before lobbing the ball over the keeper from 40-yards.
Crossdale, Felix, Mandeville, Eti, Pate, Sangare, Djabi, Richmond (Agheyisi), Enow, Abdijabar, Kouadio (Ilesanmi 71)

BFC Shadow Youth Team Head Coach, Chris Andrews said: “It was one of those games where every player in the team was on form and working well as individuals, pairs and units.
“We moved the ball really well in the first half and caused them plenty of problems. The second half was all about digging deep, absorbing the pressure and taking our chances when in front of goal.”
“We have a young team of 16 and 17 year old first years who are playing in an under 19s league, therefore, they have to learn to cope with the physical and technical demands of the game at this level.
“It was pleasing to watch the hard work from the training ground being put into match practice during the game.”
We are looking to recruit talented players currently in Years’ 11 and 12 to join the Shadow Youth Team for the 2016/17 season.
The first trial will take place at Nelson and Colne College on Saturday 13th February, 1.00pm – 3:30pm.
