Former Burnley FC defender and now Deputy CEO of Burnley FC in the Community, Paul France, is set to lead the charity’s latest cycle challenge, The Harry Potts Way.
A three day, 160 mile challenge, the bike ride is not only a homage to the late, great former manager and Burnley FC legend, Harry Potts but a charity challenge designed to raise as much money for Burnley FC in the Community.
France, a keen cyclist, will lead the cycle ride that will start at Shrewsbury FC on Thursday 28th April and end at Turf Moor, prior to the Clarets’ final home game of the season against QPR on Saturday 30th April.
“We’ll be paying a visit to four of the clubs that played a significant part in Mr Potts’ playing and managerial career”, explains France.
“Starting at Shrewsbury, we’ll head to Everton and Blackpool before returning to the Turf for the culmination of the ride”.
“We want as many people as possible to get involved. As the club’s official charity, we’re working hard every day to make real positive changes in our region and all the money raised from this event will go to supporting this work.”
“I also want to make it clear that this isn’t just for experienced cyclists. Just three years ago I had no experience of cycling at all but I decided to get involved with a similar challenge at Huddersfield Town, where I previously worked.
"At that point, I was at the stage in my life where I needed some motivation to kick start my fitness again; I had gone from being a very active, ex-professional footballer to someone who really struggled to do any form of exercise.
"At the point of registering, I didn’t even own a bike so I searched eBay and bought myself a hybrid Boardman bike. I started training and my first ride was just 5 miles - I felt shattered! But knowing the cycle ride was at a fixed point in time really spurred me on. Over a 3 month period, I became obsessed with cycling. My training rides went up to 10, 15, 25 and 35 miles and eventually, I managed to complete the challenge.
"I felt fit for the first time in about 10 years - it actually totally changed my life. And I haven’t looked back since. I can’t wait to get started on this brand new challenge.”
And for those fundraisers who hit the £1000 target for The Harry Potts Way will receive a free Burnley FC season ticket for the 2016 / 2017 season.
