The Barnfield Training Centre continues to undergo a £10.6m transformation.
Work is well underway to complete the new building, linked to an adjoining new 60m x 40m indoor facility, which will provide first class facilities for the first team, development squad and youth team players, under one roof, for the first time.
The development of the 73,000 m2 area also includes new pitches, which are close to completion.
The site is due to open in 2017, and we caught up with Stadium and Operations Manager Doug Metcalfe for an update on the build, in December, 2016.
Doug said: “Works remain ahead of schedule, which we are delighted about.
“In terms of the external appearance of the accommodation block, the eye-catching sedum roof is now in place and establishing well, which helps to create that sympathetic connection with the immediate environment.
“As for the build itself, we have had one or two recent challenges, which we will move the completion date to the other side of Christmas.
“We were working to a pre-Christmas completion, but the important thing is we are still ahead of the initial programme.
“The finishes element of project is now well underway, including floor coverings, ceilings and decorations, and once individual rooms are complete, they’ll be closed up and locked down.
“There are still external works to be completed, such as road ways, carparks and landscaping, but these are the final items of the programme, so from a building construction aspect, the main accommodation block will be ready mid-January.
“At that point, the principal contractor, Barnfield Construction, hands the building over to the club for the completion of the internal fit-out works, involving the modelling and creation of the internal environment, followed by the mobilisation and migration of staff from the respective and current working locations to their new environment.
“The building housing the indoor pitch will also be handed over by the contractor at the turn of the new year and then our sports turf contractor, J Mallinson, will complete the playing surface in this area, which is scheduled to be complete by the end of-February 2017.
“As for the external pitches, we still have the third, full-sized, heated Desso pitch next to the main building being constructed.
“Desso are stitching that pitch this week and should be complete by Christmas, weather permitting at which point it will be seeded and left to establish with the intention of it being ready for use towards the end of the season.
“Two, three-quarter pitches at the opposite end of the site are also under construction and will be available for use at a similar time”
