Ntumba Massanka’s second half goal earned the Development Squad a well-deserved 1-1 draw against Middlesbrough.
Both Kevin Long and Joey Barton played 90 minutes in their bid for fitness in a competitive affair at Gawthorpe, with the latter making his first appearance in Burnley colours.
The Clarets could have taken the lead early on with two strikes in the opening 10 minutes, but both Massanka and Jamie Frost couldn’t steer their efforts on target.
Barton, who has over 250 Premier League appearances to his name, came the closest to breaking the deadlock in the first half with a testing free-kick that whipped over the crossbar from 25-yards out.
But on the hour mark the Clarets were in front when Massanka capitalised on a superb ball from Alex Whitmore, using his body to shrug off the battling defender, before lobbing the Boro goalkeeper.
Boro hit back just five minutes later. A through ball was picked up by the striker and despite an instinctive save from Northern Ireland U21 international Conor Mitchell, the loose ball was fired home.
The game, which was an even affair of few opportunities, had a chance for either side in the last 10 minutes.
The visitors struck the crossbar with a powerful header from an in swinging corner, before the Clarets almost nicked it in the dying moments.
From an inswinging corner of their own, substitute Brandon Wilson saw his header well saved to deny the midfielder a goal with his first touch.
