The Youth Team are through to the Quarter-Final of the Lancashire FA Professional Cup after beating Accrington Stanley 2-1.
The Clarets had to come from behind to seal the win, with strikers Tommy Wood and Khius Metz scoring the goals at Burnley Belvedere, to cancel out Stanley’s 68th minute opener.
Metz and Wood were a handful all game, with the pair complementing each other superbly with Metz’s pace playing off Wood’s height and power.
And it was Metz who used his pace 10 minutes in to have the first strike of the game. He burst past Stanley’s right back before striking straight at the Reds’ keeper.
On the half hour mark Metz was through once more, pouncing on Hamam El-Fitouri’s long ball, but the striker saw his lob well saved.
The Clarets had a strong appeal for a penalty turned down on the stroke of half time when Wood flicked on a through-ball and it appeared to strike the Stanley defender’s arm, but the referee waved play-on.
And it was Stanley who took a shock lead 22 minutes before time, getting in behind Burnley’s defence before a clinical strike found the bottom right corner past Tony Aghayere.
However, the lead lasted just three minutes as Wood finally found the back of the net after a frustrating game in front of goal.
Metz’s low ball in from the right was scuffed by Jamal Crawford, but it landed perfectly for Wood, who made no mistake from 10-yards out.
And with just eight minutes left on the clock, the Clarets secured the win through Republic of Ireland U19 international Metz.
Miles Fenton’s in swinging cross from the left was kept headed onto the crossbar by Wood, but the ball fell back into play and Metz volleyed in the winner.
