A strong Clarets XI overpowered Hartlepool as several first teamers moved closer to a return.
Joey Barton, pictured above, was on target for the second successive game, 24 hours after making the bench at Derby, and completed another 90 minutes as he enters the final phase of his own ‘pre-season’.
Meanwhile, Fredrik Ulvestad was also on the scoresheet on his 45-minute return to action, following an ankle injury sustained in the final pre-season game back in August.
And there was more good news as Kevin Long, Matthew Lowton and Dean Marney also featured in the resounding 3-0 victory at Gawthorpe.
It was a dominant display from the whistle from the Clarets, with Chris Long lively leading the attack alongside Ntumba Massanka.
The former Everton striker could have opened the scoring in the 10th minute following a delicious through-ball from Barton, but the Pool keeper made a fine save at his near post.
And it was new signing Barton who broke the deadlock in the 20th minute.
The former QPR midfielder netted from the spot against Everton last time out, and was on target with another dead ball – this time a free kick form 25 yards - curled beautifully into the top corner after Ulvestad’s driving run had been halted illegally.
Seven minutes later, Norwegian midfielder Ulvestad scored his first goal for the Clarets with a sublime finish, low into the bottom corner from outside the box, following neat build-up play from Massanka.
And Chris Long and Massanka both came close to extending the lead before the break, with efforts just off target.
After the restart, changes disrupted the flow, but the chances continued to come the hosts’ way, with Chris Long, Barton and Cameron Dummigan all coming close.
And it was left to summer signing Luke Hendrie to round off the scoring three minutes from time.
The former Derby County midfielder played a neat-one-two with fellow sub Rennie Smith and cut inside from the left to drill home from 12 yards.
