Preston North End 2-2 Burnley
A crowd of more than 15,000 saw this Deepdale clash in the old Second Division, with the Clarets coming back to rescue a point thanks to a disputed penalty from Peter Noble. North End were then led by 1966 World Cup winner Nobby Stiles in his first managerial role, and he had guided Preston to promotion at the end of his first season in charge.
Harry Potts was in the second full campaign of his second spell at the Turf Moor helm.
Preston went ahead on 7 minutes before Steve Kindon equalised ten minutes later, when Leighton James produced a superb cross after one of his electrifying runs down the wing.
The ball found Billy Ingham, who stepped over it for Kindon to expertly slot home. Alex Bruce put North End in front again before half time.
After the interval the Clarets were under pressure from a North End team who were in the relegation zone and searching for their first victory in ten games.
However on 67 minutes Paul Fletcher floated a cross into the Preston box which seemed to hit a defender on both arm and chest.
The referee had no hesitation and pointed to the spot, for Peter Noble to do what Peter Noble did on a regular basis in those days.
