Young Clarets Eye Lancashire Glory

8 November 2015

Young defender Alex Whitmore wants the club’s Development Squad to follow in the first team's footsteps in Monday’s mini-derby.

The Clarets host Blackburn Rovers at Turf Moor in the U21 Premier League Cup.

And after impressive displays against Wigan Athletic and Barnsley to reach the third round, Geordie defender Whitmore is looking to emulate the recent Championship victory at Ewood Park and progress further at the expense of their local rivals.

He said: “You always want to beat your rivals at any team you play for at any level and this game is no different.

“The first team did the fans proud beating Blackburn last month and we want to do just that too by putting in a good performance.”

“We have done well in the last two rounds and we obviously want to win every game but with it being a derby it obviously adds a little more to the fixture.”

The cup tie at Turf Moor is being played behind closed doors, at 1pm, and Whitmore explained although the players are disappointed not to have the backing of a home crowd, the outcome is everything.

He said: “The game being behind closed doors takes a little bit of the atmosphere away but we are all professional enough get on with it regardless who is watching and just do our best in trying to get the win.

“All of the lads are looking forward to it. We don’t get a lot of chances to play competitive games so this contest makes the game even more special.

“Everybody wants to win their derby, but the main objective is just to get through to the next round.

“It doesn’t matter who the opposition is, we just want to play well every game and do our best to win.”
