Boyd: Win Doesn’t Surprise Us

14 March 2015

George Boyd insists Burnley always believed they could beat the bigger teams after the Clarets earned a famous home victory over Manchester City.

The Scot produced a stunning, first-time strike shortly past the hour mark to give the Clarets all three points against the champions.

It was Burnley’s fifth win and sixth clean sheet of the season as they went within a point away from 17th place in the Premier League table.

And Boyd reiterated that the Clarets, who also held City to a draw at the Etihad earlier on this season, were not surprised by their biggest result of the campaign so far.

He said: “What a feeling! To take four points off the champions this season is a massive effort. It’s a huge win and just a massive three points.

“I think apart from Liverpool, where we hit a team that are on form with a lot of players who are playing very well, we’ve been in every other game.

“We played brilliantly at ManU and didn’t get anything, but today from start to finish it was just a great performance from every one.

“It doesn’t surprise us in the dressing room though. We fully deserved the point when we went there and I’d say we deserved the win today.

“We haven’t feared anyone all season and we’ve got a massive belief that starts from the gaffer and the staff.

“We go into every game thinking we’re going to win and as it proved today we can beat anyone on our day.

“We just play our own game and this is why we worked so hard to get here and enjoy these occasions and we’ll now go to Southampton full of confidence.”

Boyd gave England goalkeeper Joe Hart no chance with a superbly-struck effort from just outside the box after the ball had dropped into his path following a free-kick on 61 minutes.

And he admitted that he couldn’t have hit the ball any better to clinch the famous victory!

The Scot added: “Shacks [Jason Shackell] was going around the back to head it and I think it was [Vincent] Kompany who headed it out.

“I just hit it nicely and sweetly on the half-volley and it’s gone into the bottom corner.

“I think this is what you need to do with those top goalies, so that they’re not going to save it.

“Luckily enough, it hit the corner and gave us massive three points.”
