Dyche Chesterfield Reaction

25 July 2015

Sean Dyche admitted his pre-season plans were being hampered by a shortage of strikers, following the 3-2 defeat at Chesterfield.

Lukas Jutkiewicz was the only recognised frontman on show at the Proact Stadium, scoring his second goal of pre-season along with George Boyd to put the Clarets ahead early in a game that saw the Spireites fightback from two goals down.

Dyche is hopeful of seeing Sam Vokes, Jelle Vossen and Marvin Sordell return for the penultimate planned warm-up game at Fleetwood on Tuesday.

And the gaffer refused to rule out the possibility of arranging extra games to ensure his frontmen are firing on all cylinders for August 8.

He said: “It was an excellent test today because at this stage we are still working with very low numbers.

“Obviously we are missing our strikers, which makes a big difference to the way we play, but in the first half I felt we controlled it and should have been out of sight with the chances we had.

“We were very good in the first half an hour, in particular. Their first was a really poor goal and to be fair they scored a ‘worldy’ from an overhead kick then won it with a scramble at the end.

“But credit to Chesterfield. They went hard all the game, made lots of substitutes and had that freshness at the end.

“We’ll get that in the end from playing these games, so that’s an important factor. That’s what pre-season is for; to get all the glitches out of the system.

“We have to do that, of course, but I think we’ll be different when we have our strikers back. They often change the way the team work and also the outcome.

“We have obviously made changes there and we haven’t seen much in game time from Jelle. We want to get Sam fully fit and Marvin too.

“They’re nothing serious and we think they’ll probably be ready for Tuesday.

“We’ve looked at a few extra games to get them fit because the timing of the injuries means that when you have a tranche of games, as you do, in a week you can miss four opportunities to play.

“That’s pre-season for you, so we’ll look to change things on Tuesday, providing everyone is alright and get more bodies out there and more fitness into the side.”
