Wrexham 1 Burnley Dev Squad 1

4 February 2015

The Clarets' development squad drew 1-1 at Wrexham's Colliers Park Training ground on Wednesday afternoon.

Jason Gilchrist cancelled out Wrexham's early opener as the development squad had to settle for a share of the spoils.

Originally scheduled for grass, a frozen pitch in North Wales meant that the two teams had to battle it out on the 4G surface.

And the Clarets got off to a poor start, going a goal down after just four minutes.

After possession was lost in midfield, the Welsh side countered and tried their luck from distance with a 25-yard strike that whistled past Tony Aghayere in goal.

The youngsters bounced back, with an instant response two minutes later. After some good work down the wing, Steven Hewitt's exquisite ball found Gilchrist in the box, who clinically found the back of the net.

After that explosive start, the game mellowed and it took another 30 minutes for there to be a real chance of note.

A long diagonal ball from Luke Daly was inch-perfect for Gilchrist, who advanced at goal but couldn't replicate his earlier effort, as the keeper gathered.

Fresh from his youth team appearance on Tuesday, Aghayere was often called upon, in just his second appearance for the Development Squad.

And the Spaniard made a vital save three minutes before the break. From a tight angle, the Wrexham forward did well to get a shot on target and Aghayere was forced to make a point-blank tip-over.

Shortly after the restart, a similar chance fell again, but this time the hosts’ striker fired past Aghayere, but also wide of the post.

From that point, the Clarets controlled the game. Although there were few chances, Burnley enjoyed the majority of possession against a strong Wrexham side looking to impress in front of manager Kevin Wilkin.

And five minutes from time, Burnley had the best chance of the game. A well worked corner routine resulted in a ball across goal from Hewitt, but Alex Whitmore at the far post saw his shot cleared off the line.

Burnley: Aghayere; Daly (Richardson 65), Anderson, Whitmore, Conlan; Frost (Galvin 59), Lowe, Hewitt, Howieson; Trialist (Ly 70), Gilchrist.
