ON THIS DAY, 5 August 2014
A year ago today it was the Clarets’ first home match in the pre-season build-up as Turf Moor welcomed back our promotion heroes.
Celta Vigo were the visitors for what would be Burnley’s first-ever meeting with the La Liga side and the encounter finished all-square at 2-2.
New signing Lukas Jutkiewicz scored both Burnley’s goals, his fourth and fifth strikes during the Clarets’ friendly matches leading up to the Premier League campaign.
Jutkiewicz had arrived from Middlesbrough, with other new signings on view Matt Taylor from West Ham, Marvin Sordell from Bolton and Steven Reid from West Brom.
ON THIS DAY, 5 August 2006
Prior to 2006 only three Burnley players in the club’s history had scored more than once on their league debut for the Clarets.
On this day nine years ago Northern Ireland international Steve Jones made it four, notching both goals in a 2-0 win against QPR at Turf Moor on the opening day of the new season.
He also became only the second Burnley player in the post-war period to achieve the feat, following Warren Joyce in August 1993.
Burnley team (442): Brian Jensen, Frank Sinclair, Wayne Thomas, Michael Duff, Jon Harley, Alan Mahon, Chris McCann, James O’Connor, Steve Jones, Andy Gray, Kyle Lafferty,
Subs used: Micah Hyde, Wade Elliott, Garreth O‘Connor.
Steve Jones was signed by manager Steve Cotterill from Crewe Alexandra and spent three years at Turf Moor, making 64 senior appearances, but surprisingly managed only four more goals after his brace on debut. He collected five full international caps whilst with Burnley, winning 29 altogether, before moving on to Walsall in 2009.
Back in 2006 this date was the earliest-ever start to a season involving the Clarets, although in 2013 the first league fixture was even earlier, on 3rd August.
