Burnley’s Development Squad fell to a 1-0 defeat against Fleetwood Town at Gawthorpe.
The Clarets went down to a 17th minute free-kick on Tuesday afternoon, watched by former Burnley captain and Fleetwood boss Graham Alexander.
First team fringe players Chris Long, Tom Anderson and Brad Jackson all played 90 minutes in the tight affair.
And it was Anderson who was heavily involved in the first chance of the game.
The defender pulled off a stunning reaction block, denying a Fleetwood striker, before the follow up was skied over the crossbar.
The visitors then took lead 10 minutes later. The referee awarded a free-kick 25-yards from goal and Cod Army’s Ashley Hunter neatly found Dan Nizic’s bottom left corner.
The Clarets almost levelled things up five minutes later, when summer signing Josh Ginnelly’s weaving run ended in a fierce strike which was well held.
The Clarets’ two strikers, Long and Dan Agyei, both combined well throughout the first half, creating several chances for each other without finding that killer strike.
In the second half both sides continued to half their fair share of possession, with the Clarets almost scoring a late equaliser.
Ginnelly played a neat one-two with Nathan Lowe before the former Shrewsbury Town winger pulled back a dangerous cross.
Ntumba Massanka met the delivery, but the striker couldn’t shake off an on-rushing defender and his strike was deflected agonisingly over.
Burnley: Nizic; Hendrie, Anderson, Whitmore, Trialist (Hewitt 45); Jackson, Smith (Wilson 65), O’Neill (Lowe 65), Ginnelly; Agyei (Massanka 65), Long.
