Loan Watch

27 April 2015

Steven Hewitt’s stunning first goal for Southport sealed a victory for the Vanarama Conference outfit at Welling United.

The on-loan Clarets midfielder, pictured above, struck with a magnificent 30-yard effort to end the season in style and ensure the Sandgrounders will be competing in the top tier of non-league football next season.

Hewitt will now return to Turf Moor.

Clarets defender Danny Lafferty, however, faces a nervy final week of the Championship season on loan at Rotherham after playing the 90 minutes in the 1-1 home draw to Norwich City.

The Millers controversial three point deduction last week for fielding an ineligible player, coupled with Saturday’s last-gasp draw against the Canaries, keeps the Millers a solitary point above the drop zone.

Rotherham can, however, ensure survival with victory at home to Reading on Tuesday night.

Goalkeeper Alex Cisak also has a make-or-break week at Leyton Orient following his man-of-the-match winning performance in the 1-1 home draw with play-off contenders Sheffield United.

Clarets stopper Cisak - along with defender Luke O’Neill, who did not play against the Blades - now need to help Orient win at Swindon on the final day next Saturday, and hope other results go their way, for the O’s to remain in League One.

Elsewhere, Jason Gilchrist played the last half hour as a substitute in Accrington Stanley’s 0-4 defeat at Dagenham and Redbridge.
