Michael Jolley believes playing under the lights at Turf Moor will benefit his Development Squad when they take on Hull City in the U21 Premier League Cup (7pm kick-off).
The first qualifying round fixture tonight, that was originally scheduled to played at North Ferriby United, was switched to Turf Moor.
And as Jolley’s side look to emulate the heroics of last year’s competition, when the Development Squad reached the semi-finals before narrowly losing out to Manchester City, he believes that playing at home will help his players.
Jolley said: “I think the lads who played last year did phenomenally well to get that level of the competition.
“We’ve got Hull tomorrow night and really we can only look at the first round. Hull development sides are always really competitive.
“It’ll be good experience for us to play at Turf Moor, the lads are in good form at the moment so we go into the game with confidence.
“Most of our games take place in academy environments so to have the game under the lights will test the lads in a different way.”
The Development Squad boasts players that were instrumental in the FA Youth Cup run in 2012, which saw Jason Gilchrist bag a hat-trick at Old Trafford, as well as some who featured last season.
And Jolley hopes that in the absence of league action, the competitive edge of cup competition will help his team flourish again.
He added: “We’ve got some good characters and it’s a highly competitive group who want to win games.
“We’re not in a league at the moment so these cup games are important to us to test themselves in a competitive situation.”
The James Hargreaves Upper is the only area of the stadium open for this game and tickets can be purchased on the gate priced as follows:
