Clarets defender Stephen Ward has been named in the Republic of Ireland’s 27-man squad for their forthcoming UEFA Euro 2016 qualifier against Gibraltar.Martin O’Neill’s side got off to the perfect start in Group D with a 2-1 victory over Georgia in Tbilisi, with Ward playing the full 90 minutes and earning his 26th cap. Ireland will play their first home game of the qualifying campaign against Gibraltar on Saturday 11 October. (5pm kick-off).
Elsewhere, goalkeeper Matt Gilks has been called up to represent Scotland for their European qualification double header against Georgia and Poland, after Hull City’s Allan McGregor was ruled out through injury.
And defender Michael Keane has been called up to the England U21 squad for their European Championship play-off ties against Croatia.
Southgate’s side take on the Croats in the first leg at Molineux on Friday 10 October (Live on BT Sport 5.45pm kick-off) before travelling to Vinkovci for the second leg on Tuesday 14 October.
Young goalkeeper Conor Mitchell has also been called up to represent Northern Ireland U19s in a UEFA U19 mini-tournament involving Czech Replublic, Russia and the Faroe Islands.
