Sam Hopes For Hat-Trick Of Honours

8 March 2014

A derby-day winner for Sam Vokes would be the icing on the cake of a momentous week for the striker.

After scoring for his country in a 3-1 win on Wednesday, the Welshman was named SkyBet Player of the Month for February.

The accolade, his first individual honour, comes as a great testament to Vokes’ performances this season following 18 goals that have helped hoist the Clarets to second in the Championship.

And with the East Lancashire derby fast approaching, a win for Vokes and co would secure a unique hat-trick of achievements for the 24-year-old.

He said: “I think it would be the best week of my career if I scored the winner in the derby at the weekend.

“Starting for your country is a massive honour for me. I’ve been working at club level to establish myself here, so to get the chance to start when I’m going away is great.

“To score for my country and get the win was a great feeling.

“That has been topped off by being named Player of the Month, which was another great honour.

“It shows what the team has been doing this season; there’s a great team behind me and that’s what all comes together in the end.”

After what has been an outstanding week, Vokes’ attention now turns fully to the weekend and the trip down the M65 to face Blackburn.

The past three meetings between the two Lancashire rivals have ended all square, including last season’s encounter at Turf Moor, which saw Vokes’ 89th minute goal salvage a point for the Clarets.

And after coming so close on the two occasions since, the Welshman acknowledges how much a win on Sunday would mean to Burnley supporters.

He said:  “It shows me how much it means to the fans that they are still talking about my goal.

“It was fantastic for me personally and it would be really nice to get another one on Sunday.

“It’s a massive game, a big local derby and with the form we’re in at the moment we can take a lot of confidence into it.

“It has been a big one to me since I joined really. Some of the games recently have ended up draws when we’ve felt like we have been on top, and I think we can take a lot from that.

“I think there is a definitely a bit of extra motivation with those previous meetings and we always want to go there and win.

“There’s been an extra buzz this week leading up to the game. You can feel it in the changing room that all the lads are looking forward to it.”
