Danny and Sam Make Club History

26 March 2014

Yet more Burnley FC history was made when Sam Vokes’ penalty hit the net against Doncaster on Tuesday. That spot kick was Sam’s 20th league goal of the season, following the 20 league goals mark reached by Danny Ings in that memorable victory at Ewood Park earlier in the month.

Sam’s strike marked the first time two Burnley players have reached 20 league goals in a season for nearly half a Century, since Willie Irvine (22) and Andy Lochhead (21) achieved the feat in 1964-65.

However, more significantly, Danny and Sam are only the fifth pair of Burnley goalscorers to both reach 20 league goals in a season in the club’s history and we should now salute the Ings/Vokes partnership as new record holders.

Their achievement has been reached earlier in the campaign than any of the previous goalscoring partnerships.

The previous partnerships are:
Willie Irvine / Andy Lochhead: 1964/65
Jimmy Robson / Ray Pointer 1960/61
George Beel / Louis Page: 1927/28
Joe Anderson / Bob Kelly: 1920/21
