Young Clarets defeated at Thorp Arch
Burnley Development Squad suffered a 3-0 defeat against a very strong Leeds United side at the Yorkshire club’s training ground.
Recognisable faces such as El Hadji Diouf, Michael Tonge and Matt Smith all contributed for the Whites on a difficult afternoon for the young Clarets.
The Leeds first team regulars didn’t take long to get in on the action when targetman Smith headed over from just six-yards.
But the opener came soon after, when Diouf used his experience to beat his man and rifle a curling effort into the top corner from just outside the box.
It wasn’t just Leeds making the chances though, and Jason Gilchrist had a golden chance for the equaliser in the 32nd minute after Joseph Mills found the striker with a dangerous cross. However, the poacher couldn’t steer his shot away from the advancing defender.
Moments later the Clarets were on the attack again, with the Clarets midfield trialist testing the Leeds’ goalkeeper with a low strike which was well saved.
Burnley then had a strong shout for a penalty, ten minutes into the second half, when Gilchrist followed up on his tame shot and was brought down in the area, only for appeals to fall on deaf ears.
Being clinical was the big difference and Leeds did just that after the hour mark when Smith rose above the Burnley defence and neatly cushioned his header into the bottom left hand corner to double the advantage.
And former Crewe midfielder Luke Murphy completed the scoring from the restart with a deft finish over half time substitute, Callum Jakovlevs.
There was a late chance for a consolation as Gilchrist found himself one-on-one, only to be denied by the United keeper.
And following his return from a loan spell with Halifax Town, Archie Love came within inches of reducing the arrears following a well-worked move that the midfielder whistled just past the post.
