Sam Vokes stands on the verge of a return to first team squad following another two goals in the Development Squad’s 5-1 against Blackpool.
The Welshman completed 90 minutes in his fifth appearance for the U21 Development Squad since he suffered a knee injury in March; playing the full duration in three of those games.
And although manager Sean Dyche has vowed not to rush Vokes, back, the striker staked another claim for a return to duty in a comprehensive victory against the Seasiders.
The U21 Development Squad was up against a strong Blackpool side, with recognisable names such as Darren O’Dea, Andrea Orlandi and Ishmael Miller being three of nine players out of their first team Squad and just two players under the age of 20.
Vokes and the Clarets got the ball rolling in the 17th minute. Superb work from Cameron Howieson found Jason Gilchrist, who set up his strike partner Vokes, for the forward to clinically score the opener off the post.
The Welshman bagged his and Burnley’s second 17 minutes later. Some lovely work down the right flank from Luke Daly ended with a delightful cross to Vokes, who made no mistake from eight yards.
On the half-hour mark, the paint off the post was the difference between captain Steven Hewitt and Burnley’s third, when his long-range strike cannoned to safety off the frame of the goal.
Hewitt though did grab the Clarets third. A corner routine saw Luke Conlan dribble into the danger zone and Hewitt tapped in at the near post after Conlan’s shot came out off the post.
Burnley’s fourth soon followed and Hewitt was again involved as his deep cross found Gilchrist, who exquisitely bulleted his header into the top corner.
Conor Mitchell had earlier looked unbeatable in the Clarets’ goal, after some wonderful saves denied the Tangerines any chance of a fightback.
But the Seasiders’ did finally grab a consolation, direct from a deep corner that evaded everybody and nestled into the far netting.
And with 10 minutes to play, second half substitute Jamie Frost bent completed the scoring, with a strike from 20-yards that flew over Parish in the Blackpool goal.
