Clarets striker Sam Vokes made another goalscoring return to action with a 70-minute run-out in the Development Squad’s 5-3 victory at Sheffield United.
The Welshman, who played his first competitive game last week after eight months out with a knee injury last week – and grabbed himself a goal – made it three goals in two appearances with a brace against The Blades.
Fellow striker Jason Gilchrist, pictured below, was also no target with a stunning hat-trick in the 5-3 victory in South Yorkshire.
It took Vokes 24 minutes to open the scoring, pouncing onto a Gilchrist through ball and smashing home into the top corner.
After the Clarets trailed to two quickfire goals before half time, Vokes then scored his and Burnley’s second with 21 minutes to play, capitalising on an error to nod in the equaliser.
A minute later the Clarets were ahead. Cameron Howieson’s shot slipped through the keeper’s hands and Gilchrist was more than happy to fire Burnley into the lead.
After Vokes made way on the 70th minute mark, Gilchrist duly doubled his tally to extend the lead.
The striker saw his initial shot saved, but the Development Squad’s top scorer made no mistake following in on the rebound.
A whirlwind seven minutes soon brought Burnley’s fifth, with Gilchrist securing his hat-trick by controlling Jadan Hall’s cross before smashing the ball into the back of the net.
The scoring didn’t end there, as the Blades grabbed a late consolation goal in the 79th minute.
Vokes could potentially next feature on Tuesday, December 9th, when the Development Squad make the trip to Middlesbrough.
