Striker hopes to lead Clarets into round four
Sam Vokes hopes to get the chance to keep filling Charlie Austin’s boots and help fire the Clarets into the fourth round of the FA Cup.
Vokes earned only his third start of the season in Burnley’s mid-week win at Sheffield Wednesday following a hamstring injury to Austin.
And with the Clarets’ top scorer set to miss the cup clash at Oakwell on Saturday, Vokes hopes to get the nod to lead the line again for Sean Dyche’s side.
“I’ve been kept out of the side because Charlie’s had a great start to the season with the goals he’s scored, so for me to get the chance to play would be good,” said the Wales international.
“I wish him well and a speedy recovery, but if he is out for a few games it’s a chance for me to come in and try and impress.
“Every footballer wants to play every game they can. I’d like to get a run in the team and hopefully a few goals as well.
“Tuesday was fantastic. It was good to get 90 minutes under my belt and a great victory as well.”
Vokes did his cause no harm at Hillsborough where he linked well with Ross Wallace in a central position and helped the Clarets to an impressive 2-0 win as they chalked up a second victory in three games.
And the 23-year-old, who has made a major contribution in featuring in every game this season, is looking for a similar effort to launch a cup run at the expense of the struggling Tykes.
“We have had a good run over Christmas with a good couple of wins and some good performances,” Vokes added.
“We played strongly the other day so if we can take that into Saturday it’s another chance to take get another away win and get into the next round of the FA Cup.
“It will be a tough game but if we can go there and do what we did on Tuesday we will have a chance.
“It’s a great competition and to progress would be fantastic. And if we can win at the weekend there could be some glamorous ties coming up.”
