In-form Vokes hopes for injury lift

Striker looks forward to Boro after two-goal blast

Sam Vokes hopes to have his injury fears allayed after a two-goal performance at Stoke City showed the striker is raring to go.

Vokes netted both goals as the Clarets beat a strong Stoke side 2-1 in a behind-closed-doors game at the Britannia Stadium on Tuesday.

The Wales international then picked up a foot injury which forced him off with half an hour to go.

He was due to be assessed by the Clarets’ medical staff on Wednesday after allowing the injury to settle down overnight but hopes he gets the all-clear to keep challenging for first-team duty.

“I just took a bang there but fingers crossed. I will be in the morning and we’ll see what it is,” said Vokes.

“It was good to get a game under our belts for a lot of the lads who haven’t been involved and to come here against a strong Premier League side almost and to come away with a win was good.

“It was good to get the goals early doors. It gave us a foothold in the game and personally it was nice to get on the scoresheet again.

“The big objective was to get some minutes under my belt and it was good to pop up with the two goals. You have to keep asking the question.”

Vokes has lost his starting spot to the fit-again Charlie Austin for the Clarets’ last two games.

But the 23-year-old - who also netted for Wales in their friendly win over Austria a week ago - remains an important part of the manager Sean Dyche’s attacking plans.

And Vokes, who may benefit from an extra couple of days’ recovery time after Saturday’s scheduled visit of Huddersfield was postponed, is looking forward to helping Burnley look to get their play-off push back on track against top-six rivals Middlesbrough at Turf Moor next Tuesday night.

“It’s a good chance to get out in front of our own fans and prove that we still deserve to be up there,” he added.

“We had a good run a couple of games ago and we have come off it a little bit, we all know that. But Tuesday is a good chance to get back on it.”
