Jason Gilchrist double not enough for Clarets
Two more goals from top scorer Jason Gilchrist weren’t enough to prevent the Clarets from losing to Macclesfield at Gawthorpe on Saturday morning.
Gilchrist (above) struck twice in five minutes to seemingly extend Burnley’s unbeaten Youth Alliance run to three games.
But a late winner gave Macc the points as the Clarets paid the price for a below-par defensive display.
Burnley, who included Australian Callum Richardson for the first time, trailed at the break and then went 2-0 down with half an hour to go.
But the predatory Gilchrist gave Terry Pashley’s side hope when he swivelled to fire home after 76 minutes.
The striker then levelled the scores with another classy finish, curling the ball into the bottom corner.
But with seven minutes to go Macc added a third and the Clarets’ last chance to grab a point disappeared when substitute Bradley Jackson failed to convert a late opportunity.
Burnley: Mitchell, Dummigan, Conlan, Richardson, Whitmore, Bianga, Lowe, Nuttall (Crawford 66), Metz, Gilchrist, Frost (Jackson 66). Subs: Nugent, Jakovlevs.
