Striker Paterson to miss World Cup qualifierClarets’ striker Martin Paterson has pulled out of the Northern Ireland squad to face Portugal in a World Cup qualifier next week.
But Burnley will still be represented in Porto with defender Danny Lafferty promoted from the stand-by list to join Michael O’Neill’s squad.
Paterson missed Ireland’s last World Cup qualifier in September as he recovered from a hamstring injury.
And although the 25-year-old is now fully fit and underlined his well-being with a goal at Crystal Palace last weekend, his comeback from two bouts of long-term injury is being carefully managed and he will remain with the Clarets during the international break.
Danny Lafferty has been called up
Lafferty, meanwhile, could get the chance to add to the first full cap he won for his country in a friendly defeat to Holland at the end of last season.
The 23-year-old former Derry City full-back has since made just one appearance for Burnley but joins the 23-man Irish party heading for Portugal for their Group F qualifier next Tuesday night.
Elsewhere, Burnley’s youth team pair of goalkeeper Conor Mitchell and defender Cameron Dummigan have been included in Northern Ireland’s under-17 squad for a round of European Championship games in Estonia from 21-26 October.
