Edgar's Canada out but Richards fires Jamaica through
David Edgar’s World Cup dream ended last night as Canada were knocked out on the back of an 8-1 thumping in Honduras.
A point would have been enough for Canada to reach the final round of CONCACAF qualifying.
But their hopes of securing only a second appearance in a World Cup Finals were blown away in San Pedro Sula as Honduras and Panama clinched the two qualifying places from Group C.
Edgar (above) played the full 90 minutes at right-back to win his 15th cap and now flies home to re-join the Clarets ahead of Saturday’s derby clash with Blackpool at Turf Moor.
There was better news for new Clarets' signing Dane Richards, who scored twice - including a decisive fourth goal two minutes from time - to fire Jamaica into the next round of qualifying.
The winger, who will join Burnley from Vancouver Whitecaps in January, helped the 'Reggae Boyz' beat Antigua and Barbuda 4-1 in Kingston to edge out Guatemala on goal difference and join the United States in the last qualifying stage.
In Europe, Sam Vokes (main picture) came off the bench for Wales in their 2-0 defeat in Croatia, while Danny Lafferty was an unused substitute as Northern Ireland secured a famous 1-1 draw in Portugal.
At under-19 level, Clarets’ youth team midfielder Luke Gallagher played a full game as the Republic of Ireland came from 2-0 to draw with Germany in Luxembourg.
Both sides have qualified for the elite qualifying stages of the European Championships.
