Wes Fletcher nets a treble against the Shrimps
Wes Fletcher’s hat-trick helped the Clarets’ Development squad cruise to victory over Morecambe.
Fletcher struck twice in the first half and again just after the break in the behind-closed-doors friendly at Gawthorpe, where an own goal and a late striker from substitute Joe Jackson sealed a comfortable win.
The Clarets, who gave a run out to wingers Keith Treacy and George Porter and full backs Danny Lafferty and Luke O’Neill, dominated throughout.
Fletcher opened the scoring midway through he first half when he beat the offside trap to slot home.
Morecambe briefly threatened and after a combination of Kevin Long and Aryn Williams helped to clear a shot of the line, the visitors did level from the penalty spot in the 35th minute after Archie Love was penalised for a foul in the area.
However, the Clarets immediately restored their lead when Fletcher raced onto O’Neill’s ball over the top and lobbed the goalkeeper.
A minute later it was 3-1 when a fierce, low Treacy cross from the left was turned into his own net by a defender.
Fletcher then completed his hat-trick by sliding the ball through the goalkeeper’s legs early in the second half.
And when the striker was replaced by Jackson on the hour, the striker currently on-loan at Barrow made no mistake, hammering home the fifth after the keeper could only parry Treacy’s fierce drive from distance.
