Lafferty's World Cup blow

14 November 2012

Clarets' defender plays full game for Northern Ireland

Danny Lafferty won his second cap for Northern Ireland but couldn’t prevent his country dropping two World Cup qualifying points to Azerbaijan.

Lafferty played the full Group F game at Windsor Park on Wednesday night following his late call-up to Michael O’Neill’s squad.

But the Clarets’ defender was left frustrated as Ireland were stunned by an early goal and then, despite dominating, couldn’t force an equaliser until David Healy’s injury-time strike.

Lafferty, who started his first Championship game of the season last weekend, will now report back to duty with the Clarets ahead of Saturday’s home game against Charlton Athletic.

Meanwhile, Clarets’ teenager Cameron Howieson came off the bench for the final quarter of an hour in Shanghai as New Zealand drew 1-1 in their friendly with China.
