Bury 3 Burnley 2
The Clarets started their Youth Alliance campaign with a home defeat to Bury after letting a two-goal lead slip at Gawthorpe.
Despite fielding a side containing just two-second year scholars and a handful of Centre of Excellence players the Clarets went ahead when Luke Gallagher (right) powered home a header from a Lewis Nuttall free-kick after 15 minutes.
Jason Gilchrist then doubled the lead eight minutes later when he produced a calm finish after Nuttall had won possession.
But Bury pulled one back before the break and then completed their comeback with two second-half goals.
Charlie Holt picked up a knock as the Shakers levelled two minutes into the second half and after being forced to re-organise Burnley then concededed a third with 15 minutes to go when a clearance from goalkeeper Callum Jakovlevs was charged down to give the visitors the points.
The result meant a disappointing start to the season but the Clarets' coaching staff was far from disappointed with the performance of several of their younger players, inspired by Gallagher who led by example as a makeshift central defender.
Burnley: Jakovlevs, Holt (Walsh 47), Barnes, Gallagher, Hill, Daly, Frost, Hasler-Cregg (Metz 85), Nuttall (Nugent 85), Gilchrist.
