U23s remain unbeaten after 2-2 draw with Colchester United

26 August 2019

Steve Stone’s side remain unbeaten in the U23 Professional Development League, after a 2-2 draw with Colchester United at Florence Park.

First half goals from Ali Koiki and first-year scholar Lewis Richardson gave the Clarets a 2-0 lead at the break, but United hit back through a Michael Fernandes penalty and equalised from a Jake Hutchinson strike with eight minutes left.

It took just 13 minutes for the Clarets to take the lead on a scorching afternoon at United’s training base, as Rob Harker’s close-range strike was parried by Bailey Vose into the feet of Koiki, who slammed home the opening goal of the afternoon.

And just six minutes later Burnley had a second, as Richardson picked up the ball from just outside the area and curled home his first goal of the season for the U23s.

United were looking to try and get back into the game and had a great chance when defender Danny Collinge saw his free-header sail just over the bar from a corner.

However, the Clarets came close to a third just before the break, as Richardson’s effort from inside the area rattled off the crossbar, before being cleared of danger.

As the temperature reached 30 degrees early on in the second half, midfielder Josh Benson forced Vose into a smart save from a few yards out just before the hour mark.

And just moments later the Clarets had another chance, as Olatunde Bayode broke down the right, before weaving into the area and firing over the bar.

However, the home side clawed one back midway through the second half, as Fernandes slotted the ball home from the penalty spot.

16-year old Richardson, who had already hit the bar in the first half, then saw his half-volley come back off the outside of the post.

However, as the clock ticked on the hosts equalised, as substitute Hutchinson drilled the ball into the bottom corner to pull the scores level.

Stone’s men pushed on, as they looked to regain the lead and came close when Richardson found space inside the area, before the young striker clashed with United goalkeeper Vose and the ball was eventually cleared away, with the referee waving away any penalty appeals.

And despite the Clarets' best efforts at snatching a late winner, United kept the visitors at bay to ensure both sides left with a point.
