U23s: Newcastle United 3 Burnley 4

29 September 2017

Burnley’s U23 Development side kicked off their Premier League Cup campaign with a thrilling 4-3 victory away to Newcastle United.

The home side took the lead with 20 minutes gone through Lewis McNall, who then got his second just after the hour mark.

However, a truly dramatic second half saw the Clarets score three times in 15 minutes through substitute Harry Limb, Christian N’Guessan and Khius Metz.

And despite United’s Mo Sangare equalising in the 86th minute, the Clarets snatched victory with a minute to go through Rahis Nabi (pictured, below).

The home side began the game brightly and took the lead through 18-year-old McNall, who steered home Jamie Sterry’s teasing cross.

The Clarets were close to equalising though when Metz found Jamie Thomas in the area, who rifled an effort inches wide of Paul Woolston’s goal.

Burnley came out raring to go in the second half and came close when N’Guessan found himself free in the box, before Owen Bailey blocked his effort towards goal.

Michael Duff’s side were in search of an equaliser and came close when Dwight McNeil picked out Tinashe Chakwana, but his volley bounced out off the crossbar.

However, it was the home side who struck next as Craig Spooner whipped in a fine ball for McNall, who nodded in from close range to give the Magpies a two-goal advantage.

Just before the 70th minute mark, the Clarets introduced Limb and Olatunde Bayode for Thomas and Chakwana.

And Limb made an instant impact, sparking the comeback with a nice header to find the bottom corner from McNeil’s cross.

Shortly after Burnley pulled it level as N’Guessan, unmarked in the box, slotted home past Woolston with 10 minutes to go.

And dramatically, with just six minutes to go, the turnaround was complete as Metz’s header looped over an onrushing Woolston to give Duff’s side the lead.

Incredibly though, the hosts pulled level again as Mo Sangare tapped in at the far post.

Bu just as it looked as if the spoils were to be shared, the ball fell to Nabi in the six yard box and he poked it home to restore the visitors lead.

Burnley then performed heroics to repel another United fightback in the dying seconds to secure their first victory on the road this season.

The Clarets second group game in the Premier League Cup comes on Thursday, November 2, when Colchester United are the visitors.

BURNLEY: Stone, Birch, Flowers, Younger, Koiki, Chakwana (Bayode 69), Nabi, N’Guessan, McNeil, Metz (Howarth 86), Thomas (Limb 69). Unused: King, Clarke.
