PREVIEW: Burnley U18s v Sheff Utd U18s

Clarets aims to show their steel and close in on top two places

18 March 2019

The Under-18s look to renew their play-off push when they return to action against Sheffield United on Tuesday afternoon.

After last Saturday’s scheduled fixture against Queens Park Rangers was washed out, Tony Philliskirk’s side faces the Blades at the Barnfield Training Centre (KO 1pm).

And the young Clarets will be looking to extend a seven-match unbeaten run in the U18 Professional Development League to close the gap on the northern division’s top two.

“The lads did really well to dig in and get a draw at Millwall,” said Philliskirk, whose side took a point from a goalless draw against the Lions last time out.

“A lot of things were thrown at them on that trip and in difficult conditions they battled it out to get a clean sheet and a point.

“We could even have won it earlier in the game and hopefully they can build on that performance tomorrow.”

The Clarets will again have plenty of first-year scholars in their line-up, although full-back Kane Patterson will be absent with a shoulder injury he sustained at Millwall.

Second-years Dan Moss (Lancaster City), Oscar Woods (Buxton), Ethan Kershaw and Kian Yari (both Barnoldswick Town) are currently on ‘work experience’ deals to gain the chance of senior football.

The Clarets – who lost 1-0 at Sheffield United last September – currently trail second-placed Leeds United by five points with two games in hand.

The top two teams go into the end-of-season title play-offs.

Clarets blunt the Blades at Barnfield

19 March 2019

Tony Philliskirk's young guns remain unbeaten in 2019, following a 5-1 victory over Sheffield United in the U18 Professional Development League.

The Clarets closed the gap on second placed Leeds United with four goals in seven blistering second half minutes to defeat the Blades in a game that, until that point, had been on a knife-edge.

Matty Rain had earlier given Burnley the lead on 17 minutes , before United equalised from the spot through Reon Potts.

Despite a sedate opening to the second half, Burnley went ahead on the 68th minute through Chris Conn Clarke to spark a goal-rush.

And quickfire goals from Mitch George, Joe Conley and Jaydon Major secured Philliskirk’s side the victory and extended their unbeaten run to seven games.

There was little sign of the impending drama when Burnley, who had had created just the one opening, kick-started proceedings.

Rain whipped in a dangerous corner which looped over Kelly and straight into the back of the net to give the home side the lead, echoing Ashley Westwood's goal at Anfield a week earlier.

However, United had their equaliser 10 minutes before the break as Rain was adjudged to have handled the ball in the area. Up stepped visiting captain Potts, who made no mistake from the spot.

From the restart, Burnley certainly looked the livelier team, and they regained the lead with 20 minutes to go as Conn Clarke struck from close range.

And just two minutes later the Clarets had a third of the afternoon, as George whipped a delightful curling effort into the top corner of goal.

Burnley were cruising and incredibly, in the 73rd minute they secured the game with a fourth goal, as defender Conley poked the ball home from a few yards out to put the game to bed .

And there was still time for Burnley to add a quick fifth as substitute Major pounced on a loose ball inside the box .

There would even have been a late sixth, as Will Harris struck an effort just wide of the post.

But by then, the Clarets had done more than enough to keep the pressure on the division's pace-setters.

The young Clarets are next in action on Saturday, 30th April away to Crystal Palace in the U18 PDL.
