PREVIEW: Barnsley U18s v Burnley U18s

Clarets make welcome return to action with Roses clash

15 February 2019

The Clarets’ youths return to action at Barnsley on Saturday morning with a first game in three weeks.

Tony Philliskirk’s side has been frustrated by the weather since a 4-0 win at Crewe at the end of January.

However, they are still just five points behind joint U18 Professional Development League leaders Sheffield Wednesday and Leeds, with Leeds due at Barnfield next Tuesday afternoon for a re-arranged fixture.

The Clarets – who have played just three times since the turn of the year - will be looking to extend their unbeaten run to four games against a Barnsley side sitting second bottom of the northern group.

Kick-off at the Barnsley Training Complex, adjacent to Oakwell, is at 11am.

Will Harris second half strike seals all three points

16 February 2019

Tony Philliskirk's side continued their fine form, with a 1-0 win over Barnsley securing their third consecutive win in 2019.

Striker Will Harris struck in the 50th minute, as the young Clarets remain unbeaten in the new year with three wins and a draw from their opening four fixtures.

It was a quiet first-half from both sides, neither team with any real opportunities.

Burnley came close to opening the scoring, when defender Richard Taylor headed just over the bar from close range.

And goal-scorer Harris then came close, as his attempted lob over the on-rushing Barnsley keeper' fizzed just wide.

However, Philliskirk's side stepped up the intensity in the second-half and got their deserved lead.

Mitch George slid through a delighful ball for Harris, who coolly slotted home into the bottom corner to give the visitors the lead.

Barnsley did however threaten on the break, but the Clarets defence stood strong and kept the Yorkshire side at bay.

Matty Rain made a key block as the clock ticked on, denying the Tykes an equaliser with a goal-line clearance.

And the away side held on for another three points to extend thier unbeaten run to four and secure a third win in a row.

BURNLEY: Allen, Taylor, Rain, Woods, Moss, Yari, George, Mupariwa, Harris, Kershaw, Smith.

Subs: Pruti, Richardson, Conn-Clarke, Patterson, Major.
