Youths Hope To Bridge North-South Divide

Clarets face Charlton Athletic as league sections merge

9 March 2018

The youth team resumes the southern leg of its league campaign on Saturday when they face in-form Charlton Athletic at the Barnfield Training Centre (kick-off 11am).

The U18 Professional Development League is split into northern and southern groups, with the Clarets playing northern opposition twice and southern opposition once over the course of the campaign.

Fixtures against the southern sides are loaded at either end to help with travel planning and so the Addicks make the long journey to face Danny Cadamarteri’s youngsters in pursuit of points to keep their title challenge on track.

Charlton - coached by former Ipswich defender Sergei Baltacha - are third in the southern section on the back of six successive league wins, with the top two going through to meet the top two from the northern group in the play-off semi-finals.

The Clarets still have a chance of advancing themselves but need to get back to winning ways after going six games without a victory to slip to fifth in the table – still only a point off second spot.

Recent postponements mean the Clarets still have to play games against northern rivals Hull City and Barnsley, with the home fixture against Hull re-arranged for Tuesday, 10 April (kick-off 2pm).

Late penalty earns a point and Clarets get new date for cup semi-final

12 March 2018

The Clarets bagged a late point thanks to Jordan Cropper’s 90th-minute penalty to move up a place to fourth spot in the U18 Professional Development League’s northern group.

Danny Cadamarteri’s side are still without a win since January but stopped Charlton’s winning streak to make it two games without defeat.

The in-form Addicks were on course for a seventh successive victory until Cropper (above) held his nerve to convert from the spot in a dramatic finale which also saw the dismissal of Clarets full-back Matthew Glennon.

Meanwhile, the Clarets’ Lancashire FA Professional Youth Cup semi-final at home to Wigan Athletic has been re-arranged for Tuesday, 3 April (KO 2pm).

The fixture was originally postponed on Tuesday, 27 February due to snow-covered pitches at the Barnfield Training Centre.

Burnley: King, Cropper, Glennon, Layton, Wilson, King, Jumeau (Ellison 57), Moss, Harris (Yari 75), Mupariwa (Blair ht), Barrett. Substitutes: Bruce, Mpofu.
