Young Clarets Look To Bounce Back

Youth team aims for hat-trick of wins over title rivals Leeds United

9 February 2018

The Clarets’ youths will be looking to bounce back when they face Roses rivals and fellow title challengers Leeds United on Saturday.

And Danny Cadamarteri’s side will also be out to avoid a revenge mission from the Yorkshiremen when they meet at United’s Thorp Arch training ground (kick-off 11am).

Burnley knocked Leeds out of the FA Youth Cup in December – just two days after beating them in the U18 Professional Development League.

The 2-1 league victory was part of a six-match unbeaten run in the competition for the Clarets before they lost 3-1 to bottom club Crewe last weekend.

That result saw Burnley slip off top spot in the northern division, going down to third place behind Leeds and new leaders Bolton – with all three clubs on 33 points.

Clarets suffer second successive defeat as Leeds avenge Youth Cup ex

14 February 2018

The Clarets missed out on the chance to go back to the top of the U18 Professional Development League as Leeds avenged their FA Youth Cup exit to grab pole position themselves.

Burnley had beaten Leeds in league and cup twice in the space of three days earlier in the season but couldn’t make it a hat-trick as Danny Cadamarteri’s youngsters suffered a second successive defeat.

United went ahead at their Thorp Arch training ground – after kick-off had been delayed following an early-morning pitch inspection – through Ryan Edmundson’s early headed goal before the Clarets levelled a minute later through Jordan Barnett.

Edmundson’s second put the home side back in front before the break and the striker then went on to complete his hat-trick, with former Barcelona youngster Dzhoshkun Mihaylov adding the fourth before a late consolation goal from substitute Mitchell George for Burnley.

In a hectic start, Burnley were caught out from a corner as the towering Edmundson arrived at the back post to nod past Adam Bruce and put Leeds 1-0 up.

But the Clarets hit back within 90 seconds as a trialist at left-back whipped in a fine ball for Barnett to nod home the equaliser with nine minutes gone.

Both sides then settled into the contest but it was Leeds who took a half-time lead as Mihaylov squared the ball to Edmundson to tap in from close range.

The Clarets pushed for another leveller after the break but it was the Whites who struck again, this time Mihaylov rising highest at a corner and heading home to make it 3-1.

And Edmundson – a summer signing from York City – then slotted in past Bruce after beating the offside trap to complete his treble and wrap up the points.

Burnley did pull a goal back through George, who poked in Sam Layton’s teasing cross into the area, but the 16-year-old’s second goal of the season against the Yorkshiremen was not enough to spark a late fightback.

Burnley: Bruce, Cropper, Moss, King, Trialist, Barnett, Yari, Meredith (Ellison 68), Layton, Major (George 68), Harris. Substitutes: Allen, Mupariwa, Rain.
