Laws Wants Clear Heads To Win Battle

Posted on: Wed 10 Mar 2010

Upbeat Burnley boss Brian Laws makes no secret of the importance of the next month to the Clarets' survival prospects.

Laws' men take on Stoke City at Turf Moor on Wednesday night before tackling struggling Wolves at the weekend.

The Clarets also face Blackburn Rovers and Manchester City at home in the next few weeks as they look to climb away from the relegation places.

But Laws is eager to embrace the challenge rather than shrink from it and wants his players to have clear heads as they chase the points they need to sustain top-flight status.

"To signal to the players 'come on, this is where we step up to the mark', I don't think there's anything wrong with that," said Laws.

"In fact I think it's important that everybody realises that and I get everything out of everybody on Wednesday night to get a result.

"But we shouldn't have any panic. Staying calm in these circumstances is the most important thing. The last thing you want is a panic attack.

"We have to relax. I've never seen a good player play with stress and tension.

"He's got to be relaxed and be out there enjoying the game."

Steven Fletcher faces a late fitness check

With Stoke sitting comfortably in mid-table, Laws is not under-estimating the challenge from Tony Pulis's powerful outfit.

But he believes wins are up for grabs as the Clarets seek the victory that would take them out of the bottom three on Wednesday night and leave others worrying about their fate.

"There is an important period coming up, no question about it, which will signal what will happen towards the end of the season," added the Clarets' chief.

"We have five games coming up with four at home. In our eyes all are winnable and we have to approach every game that way and we will go and attack it.

"If we can manage to get a couple if wins under our belt it will put massive pressure on another team."

Laws has no fresh injury worries to contend with following last Saturday's battling defeat at Arsenal.

Top scorer Steven Fletcher is still touch-and-go to return from a hand injury but Laws will give the Scot up to the last minute to prove his well-being.
